Bulgarian Split Squat DDR040
Bulgarian Split Squat DDR040
The Dynasty Fitness DDR040 Bulgarian Split Squat is a rear foot elevation stand designed for the Bulgarian split squat, the most effective unilateral lower body strength exercise for developing the quadriceps and gluteus maximus through a single-leg squat pattern that bilateral machines cannot replicate. The padded foam roller sits at 18.5" above the floor, placing the rear foot at the correct elevation height for full-depth split squat range of motion while keeping the elevated foot in a comfortable, cushioned position through the set. The two A-frame side uprights with rubber feet keep the stand stable on any gym floor surface during loaded sets carrying dumbbells or a barbell. At 24.3" × 23.2" × 18.5" the DDR040 occupies minimal floor space while delivering the unilateral quad, glute, and hip flexor stimulus that no bilateral pressing machine produces at equivalent per-leg intensity. Built from commercial-grade steel with a welded frame, the DDR040 is built for commercial gyms, personal training studios, and home gym setups where unilateral lower body development and bilateral strength asymmetry correction are training priorities.
- Rear foot elevation stand for the Bulgarian split squat at 18.5" pad height, enabling full unilateral split squat depth with the rear foot comfortably supported on the padded foam roller throughout the set
- Padded foam surface cushions the rear foot during both bodyweight and loaded dumbbell and barbell Bulgarian split squats, eliminating the ankle and instep discomfort that benches, boxes, and flat-edged platforms create at high training volumes
- Rubber feet on both base uprights keep the stand stable on smooth commercial and home gym floor surfaces during maximum-effort loaded split squat sets without the stand shifting or rocking
- Compact 24.3" × 23.2" footprint fits into any available floor space alongside a squat rack or open floor area, making dedicated unilateral rear foot elevated squat training practical in commercial and home gym environments of any size

Exercises and muscles targeted
Exercises and muscles targeted
| Exercise | Muscles Targeted |
|---|---|
| Bulgarian Split Squat — Bodyweight | Quadriceps — Front Leg (primary unilateral knee extension), Gluteus Maximus — Front Leg (primary unilateral hip extension), Hip Flexors — Rear Leg (eccentric stretch at depth), Adductors, Gluteus Medius (balance stabilisers) |
| Bulgarian Split Squat — Dumbbell Loaded | Quadriceps (increased bilateral load on front leg, primary), Gluteus Maximus (primary), Hip Flexors — Rear Leg (eccentric stretch under load), Adductors (stabiliser), Core (anti-rotation demand with bilateral dumbbell load) |
| Bulgarian Split Squat — Barbell Loaded | Quadriceps (maximum unilateral loading, primary), Gluteus Maximus (primary), Hip Flexors — Rear Leg (heavy eccentric stretch), Erector Spinae and Core (trunk stabilisers under barbell load) |
| Bulgarian Split Squat — Quad-Emphasis (upright torso) | Quadriceps — VMO and Vastus Lateralis (upright torso increases forward knee travel and shifts primary load toward knee extension, primary), Gluteus Maximus (secondary), Adductors (secondary) |
| Bulgarian Split Squat — Glute-Emphasis (forward lean) | Gluteus Maximus (forward torso lean increases hip flexion demand and shifts primary load toward hip extension, primary), Hamstrings (secondary), Quadriceps (secondary), Adductor Magnus (secondary) |
| Bulgarian Split Squat — Pause at Bottom | Quadriceps and Gluteus Maximus (maximum time under tension at deepest split squat position, eliminates stretch reflex), Hip Flexors — Rear Leg (sustained eccentric hold under load) |
The Bulgarian split squat is the most demanding unilateral lower body exercise in terms of per-leg quad and glute loading, because the rear foot elevation places more body weight over the front leg than a standard split squat and removes the rear leg from its ability to share the load bilaterally. The result is a front-leg stimulus that approaches what a full bilateral barbell squat produces, but through a single leg, making bilateral strength asymmetries impossible to mask through compensation. Torso lean angle is the primary variable that shifts the stimulus between quadriceps and gluteus maximus: more upright loads the quad more directly, and leaning forward shifts load toward the glute.
